Under the auspices of the Gun Control Act of 1968, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives is looking to reclassify SS109/M855 62 grain 5.56mm ammunition as “armor-piercing.” The move could also allow them to ban the manufacture, sale, and stop the importation of weapons using the caliber. It’s a backdoor attempt to get rid of the most popular sporting, hunting, and self-defense cartridge in the United States.
The ATF claims that they will be open to comments on their pending decision for 30 days until March 16th, 2015, at APAComments@atf.gov
