In Oak Harbor, Washington, gun owners responded to a city council meeting three weeks ago in which one of the councilmembers, Rick (or “Dick”, as he should be called) Almberg tried to oust a legally armed civilian by showing up in force, and openly armed. The man who was at the center of the controversy, Lucas Yonkman — an army veteran who was injured in Afghanistan — was present and had some good words for the council:
“I come to you tonight with a heavy heart,” Yonkman said. “I see a beautiful country divided and conflicted. I see a constitution being eroded, and the rights so many have fought and died for totally lost. I see men and woman who are elected leaders pushing personal agendas.”
The Oak Harbor incident mirrors many around the nation in which the political class, in a desperate attempt to avoid personal responsibility for their mismanagement of the cities, states, and the nation as a whole; and to secure themselves unopposed power have been pushing massive gun control efforts only to find themselves vehemently opposed by the public. The response of the political class has to retrench, engage in some confirmation bias in which grous who stand to support gun control are seen as affirming their actions, but the larger and more enthusiastic supporters of their civil right guarantees by the supreme law of the land are seen as “nuts.”
Simply put, these politicians are bullies, who think their power is unassailable. They learned that they were wrong in Oak Harbor, and it is an example to other gun rights activists…bullies don’t stop until faced down.
